Hi Teressa,
Urinary incontinence is not uncommon in older spayed female dogs. This occurs because since your dog is spayed, her body has run out of Estrogen.
Estrogen is the female hormone made by the ovaries that in addition to fertility controls the urethral sphincter which is similar to a valve that shuts off urine flow in people and pets.
When Estrogen levels are too low the "valve" or sphincter gets leeky and dogs leek urine or become incontinent. The solution is to ask your vet for a medication to correct this.
There are several veterinary products available as oral medications which correct this effectively within about 48-72 hours.
Urethral Sphincter incompetence affects about 20% of spayed female dogs. Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is commonly given to correct this type of incontinence. DES is also used by some veterinarians.
If I can be of further help, feel free to contact our veterinary office.
I hope this information is somewhat helpful.
Thank you
Dr Carol Osborne, DVM
