Open Question

If my pet is already sick, will pet insurance help?

Meaning does it cover pre-existing conditions?

Answers to this question:

I don't believe it will. Insurance is basically a gamble between you and the insurance company....you are betting that your pet will get sick/injured at some point and require treatment that is covered, and the insurance company is betting that your pet will not need these things. So if your dog already has an illness/injury, then the insurance company has lost its "bet" before the "game" has even started.
But to be sure, check with individual insurers...maybe there is one or two out there that will cover pre-existing conditions...but I would expect to pay a much higher premium for this type of coverage in any case.

Hi Steve,

Just as is the case with human insurance, many pet health insurance providers will permanently "blacklist" your pet's previous medical conditions. Others will require a certain "disease free interval" before providing coverage for that particular condition. There is wide variability in terms of what insurance providers offer in terms of quality and benefit. It is important to do your homework before committing your premium dollars to a particular company. I wrote an extensive section in my book, Speaking for Spot, to help people figure out this complicated topic. Additionally, check out, www.speakingforspot.com/resources.html, a page on my website that will also provide you with some guidance.

I hope this helps.

Hey Steve :)

I have pet insurance for Bentley and I had to answer questions about pre-existing conditions. The questions were mostly about cancers, kidney disease, etc. When we enrolled him in the program, we actually had to wait 14 days before the coverage started. I can see why they do this. For example, someone's dog could swallow something, causing an obstruction. He finds out from the vet that the dog will need surgery and it'll be $2,000. Well, the owner gets on the computer and enrolls his dog in a pet insurance program to hopefully save lots of money. But, the waiting period is 14 days and he cannot wait that long or his dog will die.

Bentley's pet insurance is the basic plan that covers emergencies (x-rays, surgeries, sicknesses, etc.). We got the plan as a peace of mind and hopefully we won't ever have to use it...but at about $170 a YEAR, it's definitely something every dog owner should think about getting. One incident could cost thousands of dollars.
