Have you checked with your local animal control office or if you don't have one your local sheriffs department / who ever might handle animals in your area? Occasionally, if you advise them of what it is your doing they are willing to help you to reach a solution such as helping you with live traps.
In case you aren't aware of what a live trap is, some people aren't, please don't let the name scare you..... It is simply a large cage where food is placed in it to lure the animal in, once they go for the food the door shuts and the animal is locked inside unharmed.
In all honesty, I wouldn't suggest using sleeping pills anymore as it can be a huge risk for the dog. Even though your not seeing her fall asleep near you it could very well drug her enough to effect her judgement where she could hurt herself by running in front of a car or just about anything else. It could also cause her other problems medically. Best of luck and thank you for caring enough to try and lower the population of strays in your area. :o)
