The ancient Afghan Hound is widely attributed to have originated in the mountains of Afghanistan. The Afghan is a regal hound provided the freedom to track their prey without restraint. Although often characterized as aloof, the breed exudes elegance and glamour like no other dog. The Afghan Hound was introduced into the United States in 1926.

History

The Afghan Hound is an ancient breed that is broadly traced back to the Middle East. Afghanistan was and remains an expansive land of deserts, valleys and mountains. The Afghan Hound has a regal appearance, and his ability to traverse great distances and adverse terrains while chasing game by sight made them popular with nomads. The ancient Middle Eastern nomads used the Afghan as a coursing dog allowed to pursue game freely without direction. Afghan Hounds were introduced in Europe and England in the 1800, and in the early 20th century in America. The Afghan Hound was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1926. The Afghan Hound enjoys popularity as a show dog and is still appreciated as a sight hound.

Appearance and Size

The Afghan Hound has an distinct appearance featuring a long thick silky coat with the exceptions of hair on the face and along the back. Coats vary in color and the body coat is generally different than that of their face. Afghans feature dark eyes and loger ears with large paws relative to their bodies. Adult Afghan Hounds average 25 to 27 inches in height at the shoulder and weigh approximately 50 to 60 pounds.

Personality

The Afghans as reproted today behave and think independently. Provided their history as a nomadic, coursing dog, it 's easy to see why. They are loving attention seekers known to lick and jump on guests and owners. They requires daily exercise not unlike most dogs and are said to be able to run for hours. While not excessive barkers, they are good watchdogs and convey discontent by howling.

The happiest dog on YouTube - Afghan Hound

This is our afghan hound, Shadow, and our Irish Wolfhound, Connor, reveling in the snow after a vigorous romp together. These two boys were great buddies - Connor, the gentle giant...Shadow, as flexible as a monkey and as playful as a kitten. Shadow could charm the skin off a snake - when scolded, he would plop down with bum in the air, resting on his elbows, and bark at you to lighten up. He had the best attitude on life - we are here to have fun. All our dogs have been special, but Shadow left the biggest

A charity set up by a Royal Marine is helping British troops bring home their canine friends from Afghanistan. Pen Farthing set up Nowzad Dogs after his 2007 tour of Afghanistan, where he rescued a dog from a fight, which Afghan men were arranging for sport. He believes that the dogs can be therapeutic and help soldiers re-adjust to life back home. Sergeant Sarah Marriott rescued her dog Reorg from a group of children who were going to drown him.
