Peruvian Hairless Dog

Next Breed: Petit Bleu de Gascogne Previous Breed: Perro de Presa Mallorquin

The Peruvian Hairless Dog is a breed of dog with its origins in Peruvian pre-Inca cultures. It is one of several breeds of hairless dog. It is not to be confused with the Xoloitzcuintli.

History

This is an ancient breed. Although it is often perceived to be an Incan dog because it is known to have been kept during the Inca Empire, they were also kept as pets in pre-Inca cultures from the Peruvian coastal zone. Ceramic hairless dogs from the Chimú, Moche, and Vicus culture are well known. Depictions of Peruvian Hairless Dogs appear around 750 A.D. on Moche ceramic vessels and continue in later Andean ceramic traditions.  The main area of the Inca Empire (the mountains) is too cold for the natural existence of the dogs. The Spanish conquest of Peru nearly caused the extinction of the breed. The dogs survived in rural areas, where the people believed that they held a mystical value. In recent years, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) accepted the breed and adopted an official breed standard. Before that time, in the United States, some enthusiasts created another type of Peruvian Hairless Dog, the Peruvian Inca Orchid. The Peruvian Inca Orchid is recognized by the AKC. The club UKC also recognized the breed in recent years.

Appearance and Size

According to the FCI breed standard, the most important aspect of its appearance is its hairlessness. The dog may have short hair on top of its head, on its feet, and on the tip of its tail. In Peru, breeders tend to prefer completely hairless dogs. The full-coated variety is disqualified from conformation showing. The color of skin can be chocolate-brown, elephant grey, copper, or mottled. They can be totally one color or one color with tongue pink spots. Albinism is not allowed. The eye color is linked to the skin color. It is always brown, but dogs with light colors can have clearer eyes than darker-skinned dogs. Peruvian Hairless Dogs vary in size : Small (or pequeño), 25 to 40 cm (10 to 16 inches)Medium (or medio), 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20 inches)Large (or grande), 50 to 65 cm (20 to 26 inches) The smallest weighs from 4 kg (9 lb) and the largest up to 25 kg (55 lb). The dogs should be slim and elegant, with the impression of force and harmony, without being coarse. The ears should be candle-flame shaped and erect with the possibility to lay flat. Proportions of height (at withers) to length (withers to base of tail) are 1:1.

Personality

Peruvian Hairless Dogs are affectionate with family but wary of strangers. They are typically lively, alert and friendly with other dogs but can be protective as well. These dogs do not like to be alone, but when trained, can do well. These dogs are intolerant of extreme temperatures and are agile and fast. They generally require an owner that understands dog language and are not recommended for beginners.

Dogs Tie the Knot in an Unusual Wedding Ceremony

Crowd's turned out in Peru's capitol Lima, to watch a pair of Peruvian Hairless Dogs walk up the aisle and tie the knot in a dog wedding ceremony. The two dogs dressed for the occasion, as they made their way down the aisle sniffing the rose petals the flower girls had scattered on the ground. The ceremony was made legal when the canine couple put their paw prints on the matrimonial documents. Owner Felix Manco sounds like a proud papa on this special day: "They have known each other a while and we wanted t

Xolo and Peruvian Hairless Playing and "teeth boxing"

Noche(huatl) is the nine year old Xoloitzquinte with black hair on her head. Uuki is the one year old Peruvian Viringo with blonde hair on her head. They can play like this for hours. They know they have to stay on the grass - no sidewalk, no street. Noche solves this by staying on one square of grass. Uuki solves this by JUMPING over the walkway to the next patch of grass and back.

Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican hairless dogs) Xolos are great pets!

Owning a xolo requires nothing* more than giving lots of love to. *besides: feeding, bathing, cleaning up after them, training, clothing (in cold weather), treats, sharing the couch, playing with them, vet visits, and lots of questions when taken out in public...a great pet!

A Day at Dogwood Park May 22 2011.wmv

This is of my three Peruvian Hairless Dogs, 2 of which are coated. They are playing at the Dogwood dog park in Gainesville, Fl. They remind me of a small pack of African Spotted Dogs in the way they appear to be out for a casual stroll but on the look out for prey. The Peruvian Hairless Dog is a primitive breed, that is a natural breed of dog produced by nature before 300 BC, not a dog genetically altered to produce a human's idea of what they want. The breeder of my PHD's is Melanie Chan.

Dart watches 'Dogs Want River?'

Dart, Molly's friend that appears for only a few minutes in the previous movie, watches youtube. They both watch a lot of TV, mostly Animal Planet. They both went bonkers over the kids' movie "AIR BUD"; barking insanely and they kept coming into the bedroom to get us to come out into the TV room to 'take part'.
